The canyon's best-known fall hike is closed for all of October. The Coconino National Forest order covering West Fork Trail #108 runs through Oct. 31, 2026. It also closes National Forest land within 100 feet of the West Fork drainage. The Forest Service says the deciduous trees in Oak Creek Canyon "continue to display stunning hues well into November."
Put those two dates side by side and this year looks different. The leaf season after the Pocket Fire isn't lost. It moves later and lower. Through October, the color you can reach is along the main creek corridor at Halfway, Encinoso, Grasshopper Point and the campgrounds that reopened in mid-September. West Fork's own window opens, at the earliest, in the first days of November, while the canyon trees are still turning.
The calendar the fire rewrote
The canyon has been closed in stages since June. It helps to see that order before planning an outing:
- June 19. Forest officials closed Oak Creek Canyon because of the Pocket Fire, and Slide Rock State Park closed the same day. SR 89A between Sedona and the I-17 interchange south of Flagstaff was open only to canyon residents.
- July 13. SR 89A reopened in both directions. Sedona Red Rock News reported the fire at 76% containment that day.
- July 20. Creek access closed again after rain carried ash and debris into Oak Creek.
- Sept. 17. The creek and "nearly all recreation sites along Oak Creek" reopened to the public. West Fork, its trail and Call of the Canyon stayed closed until Oct. 1.
- Sept. 26. A new order extended the West Fork closure through Oct. 31, covering rockfall and flood-debris hazards after rain in the burned watershed.
So the Oct. 1 date many people had in mind came and went for West Fork without a reopening. The Forest Service explained why West Fork was held back when the rest of the creek opened: that watershed "had a higher percentage of fire damage."
Two signature color spots, both off the list for now
West Fork is the obvious loss. Call of the Canyon, the paved day-use lot most people park at for that hike, is harder to read. The Sept. 14 release grouped it with West Fork under the closure that ran until Oct. 1. The Forest Service fall-colors page, last updated Sept. 22, still says the Call of the Canyon Picnic Site "is closed due to the Pocket Fire." The newer West Fork order names the trail and the drainage. Nothing we have reviewed confirms that the picnic site and its parking have reopened. Call the Red Rock Ranger Station at 928-203-2900 before planning a day around that lot.
The same fall-colors page carries a second notice that matters to anyone who usually splits the season between Sedona and Flagstaff. Lockett Meadow Road is "closed to all traffic," including people on foot and on bikes. That takes the usual high-country aspen trip off the table as well. The color that's open this October sits along the main creek.
Where the color is open right now
These are the sites with a current posted status. "Site Open" means the Forest Service page displayed that label when it was last updated.
| Site | Current status | Status as of | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halfway Picnic Site | Site Open | Sept. 25 | Creekside day use on the main stem of Oak Creek |
| Encinoso Picnic Site | Site Open | Sept. 25 | Day use, upper canyon |
| Grasshopper Point | Included in the Sept. 17 reopening of nearly all creek sites | Sept. 14 release | Day use closest to town |
| Manzanita Campground | Site Open | Sept. 25 | Overnight option along the creek |
| Pine Flat Campground | Site Open | Sept. 25 | Sits at the start of ADOT's guardrail work zone |
| Cave Springs Campground | October sites showing on reservation system | Late Sept. | Not among the sites held closed after Sept. 17 |
| Oak Creek Vista | Site Open | July 18 | Native American marketplace vendors set up only occasionally |
| Slide Rock State Park | Fully open; swimming reopened Sept. 17 | Sept. 24 | Swimming is not currently recommended |
| West Fork Trail #108 | Closed | Through Oct. 31 | Includes land within 100 feet of the drainage |
| Call of the Canyon | Unconfirmed | Last listed closed Sept. 22 | Call 928-203-2900 |
Slide Rock comes with a caveat worth reading in full. "Slide Rock State Park is completely open," Arizona State Parks & Trails spokeswoman Michelle Thompson told Sedona Red Rock News on Sept. 18. "There's no closures at all." She said heavy rain on Sept. 16 had left "a lot of ash, some tree limbs, some just churned up dirt and remains from the Pocket Fire in the water." So the park is open for walking the banks and seeing the color, but officials are not recommending swimming.
For an overnight in the canyon away from the campgrounds, Orchard Canyon on Oak Creek, formerly Garland's Lodge, shows an October 2026 booking calendar with a live reservation link. We couldn't confirm the current operating status of other canyon businesses from a dated source, so check with any lodge or market directly before you drive up.
Why November looks like the better bet for West Fork
The Forest Service says fall color in Arizona's high country usually starts showing in late September and peaks through October. Higher elevations turn faster, and much of Flagstaff hits its peak in early October. The agency singles out Oak Creek Canyon as the place where color lasts "well into November."
Because of that later canyon schedule, the West Fork closure hurts less than it first looks. The order's printed end date is Oct. 31. If it lapses then and isn't renewed, the trail would reopen while the canyon trees are still in color. That's a big "if." The order has already been extended once, and the stated reason is hazard after rain, which depends on weather rather than a set date.
The longer recovery is also already visible. Thompson said vegetation in the burned part of Oak Creek "has already started regrowing," and she is hopeful that water quality for swimmers returns to normal by spring. The Forest Service said summer storms helped grasses and other early plants regrow quickly inside the burn. It also said a Burned Area Emergency Response team found that only a small share of the overall Oak Creek watershed burned. That's why the main creek corridor could reopen in September while West Fork, with heavier damage, stayed closed.
That leaves two windows. October belongs to the lower and main-stem sites: Grasshopper Point, Halfway, Encinoso, Slide Rock's banks and the campground loops. November is the month to watch for West Fork, with the ranger station on speed dial.
Before you drive up 89A
A few details from the record can save a wasted trip:
- Weekday traffic in the upper canyon. On July 13, ADOT said its guardrail project between Pine Flat Campground and the Oak Creek Vista overlook, mileposts 387 to 390, would keep lane restrictions in place Mondays through Thursdays. Flaggers alternated traffic one direction at a time, a 12-foot vehicle width limit applied, and both directions were open Friday through Sunday. The project was scheduled for completion by late summer 2026, but we found no October update confirming the work is done. Check AZ511 before a weekday drive.
- Parking. The Forest Service expects parking at popular foliage spots to be limited. It asks visitors to park only in designated areas and not to block roads or trails.
- A.B. Young Trail. Its Forest Service page lists it as closed at the Bootlegger trailhead, with access only from above the rim. That listing was last updated Aug. 5, before the September reopening, so it may be out of date. Confirm before you plan a loop around it.
- Wilderness trails. A separate Pocket Fire order kept Bear Sign, David Miller, Dry Creek, HS Canyon and Secret Canyon trails closed through Oct. 1. The Forest Service also warned that many open trails in the Red Rock Secret Canyon Wilderness were damaged during monsoon and "may have been washed out and possibly disappeared."
- Rain days. The Forest Service asks creek visitors to watch for storms and check the weather before swimming or spending time in the creek.
The Red Rock Ranger Station number, 928-203-2900, answers the two biggest open questions this fall: whether Call of the Canyon has reopened, and whether the West Fork order ends on Oct. 31 as printed.
